Southeast Enterprises and Jimmy’s Trees are Teaming Up – Sunday, November 22, 2015
On Sunday, November 22, 2015 from 8:00am-2:00pm, Southeast Enterprises is opening its facility located at 6701 Booth Avenue, Kansas City, Mo. 64133, to the public to collect donations for our Holiday Lights Recycling Drive and Jimmy’s Trees. We will be on site to accept donations for the following items:
Any Christmas tree lights (new, working, non-working lights)
Shatterproof/plastic bulb ornaments
Christmas tree bags (the largest expense)
The Holiday Light Recycling Drive, now entering its fifth year, launched in 2011 with the intent of providing work opportunities for its employees with developmental disabilities and diverting solid waste from local landfills. The response from the community was overwhelming and Southeast has collected over 124,000 pounds or 64 tons of lights from over 165 different locations, the last four years.
Jimmy’s Trees was founded in 2012 by Tim Moses and his family to give Christmas trees and decorations to help those who need a little help to bring in the holiday spirit and put smiles on children’s faces. This was all to honor their brother who passed away at a very young age on Christmas Eve. This year, Jimmy’s Trees will give 200 trees to active duty families who are experiencing financial hardship at Fort Riley. Seventy-Five trees will go to local Kansas City organizations which help survivors of domestic violence such as Hope House and Rosebrooks. An additional twenty trees will be given to a food pantry in Lee’s Summit for distribution. All remaining trees will be given to local families whom reached out directly to Jimmy’s Trees for help.
Monetary donations and volunteer sign-ups are always welcome at both organizations.

Kansas City, MO – Thursday, August 20, 2015 – The Holiday Light Recycling Drive, now entering its fifth year, grew from humble beginnings. In 2011, Southeast launched its first drive with the intent of providing work opportunities for its employees with developmental disabilities and diverting solid waste from local landfills. That first year, Southeast collected approximately 500 pounds of lights from 11 locations.
From 2012 through 2014, Southeast aggressively pursued partnerships with a variety of schools, businesses, and organizations throughout the Great Kansas City Area. The response from the community was overwhelming and Southeast ultimately has collected over 110,000 lbs. pounds of light from over 170 different locations, the past three years.
During November 14, 2015 through January 16, 2016, Southeast Enterprises, a local nonprofit sheltered workshop that employs over 165 adults with developmental disabilities, will partner with over 180 locations throughout the Kansas City area to provide drop-off sites where the public can bring their non-working holiday lights for recycling. Once collected, most of Southeast’s employees will work to prepare the lights for recycling.
Last year, the combined efforts of Southeast, sponsors and citizens throughout the Greater Kansas City Area helped to save nearly 45,000 pounds of holiday lights from the landfill and keep Southeast’s employees working throughout the calendar year.
From November 14, 2015, through January 16, 2016, collection containers will be placed at participating locations throughout the Greater Kansas City Area for drop-off. Sponsors/Partners, so far, include MARC Solid Waste Management District, Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Fox4, Black & Veatch, Mid-Continent Public Library, Greenability Magazine, City Scrap Metal, UMKC, Jackson County, Missouri and the cities of Blue Springs, Lee’s Summit and Raytown, Missouri and Overland Park, Kansas.
Transportation costs have risen and we need help to do what we do. Southeast is excited to build on its success and collect over 40,000 additional pounds of lights with the help from many sponsors and partners. If you’re thinkin’ green, please become an official sponsor and host a collection site.
Although the 2014 – 2015 Holiday Lights Recycling Drive has ended, you may recycle any used lights at our facility all year long.Southeast Enterprises 6701 Booth Ave. PO BOX 9473 Kansas City, MO 64133
We are located on 67th St between Blue Ridge Cutoff and James A. Reed Rd, just off of MO 350 Hwy. Our hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 3:00 pm. If mailing lights to Southeast, please make sure to have PO BOX 9473 in the address or we will not receive your lights.
Thank you for your help and support!
